The APC leader and former Scopa chair says Busisiwe Mkhwebane has the wherewithal to take on the rich and powerful.

Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane has been dominating local headlines lately, with supporters springing to her defence and critics calling for her removal in the wake of the latest damning court judgment against her.

On Monday, the Constitutional Court upheld the High Court order that Mkhwebane pay 15% of the South African Reserve Bank’s legal fees.

Her ongoing battle with Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan and her investigation into the Bosasa donation to Cyril Ramaphosa's presidential campaign are also under scrutiny.

One of those in Mkhwebane's corner is the leader of the African People's Convention (APC) and former chairperson of Parliament's Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa), Themba Godi.

He feels that, in the interests of allowing South Africa's democracy to mature, a measured approach is necessary in the case of developments around the Public Protector.

On things that she got right, fortunately there is a legal recourse - once the courts have pronounced it means the findings are nullified or rejected or reviewed, but out of those judgments we should not have a lynch mob mentality.

Godi says our response should be one of reflection in situations of conflict.

If there are witnesses to be identified, what lessons do we take from them and how do we ensure there are corrective measures not only in relation to the current Public Protector, but lessons that must be carried forward to build and strengthen our structures of democracy.

Asked to elaborate on his tweets referring to a 'bigger picture' and 'resistance', Godi had this to say:

What comes though to me on the matters that have been taken up on review, is that the rich and the powerful who have access to the courts and the resources, it's almost like they are untouchable, they must not be held to account.

I feel that, much better than the previous Public Protector, she seemed to have had the wherewithal to take a stand against those who are strong and powerful, who do not seem to feel they should be held accountable, that they should be pointing fingers at people, without them accounting.
