Will the latest campaign by the Department of Health impact the state of South Africa's healthcare?

The main question is whether the government is ready for National Health Insurance (NHI).

Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize released the genesis of the NHI pilot campaign on Thursday.

The campaign looks at how to strengthen the NHI implementation process. It looked at a number of areas, and some of those areas had more to do with broad-based outreach programmes. In 10 districts, they covered 12-million households and they were able to come with solutions as to how to strengthen the NHI programme.

The campaign also indicated that more general practitioners needed to be contracted in different health facilities.

We concluded that we need strong political will will make the implementation of the NHI much easier.
