The Kouga Municipality is set to start work the road with composites of plastic.

The Kouga Municipality in the Eastern Cape is set to start work on South Africa's first eco-friendly road with plastic composites.

Local authorities will work with a Scottish company and South African engineers to construct the road.

Kuga Municipality executive mayor of Horatio Hendricks says construction is set to start on Monday.

We prefer to call it an eco-friendly road instead of a plastic road. There is a bit of plastic pallets that are added within the mix of your normal asphalt. The normal asphalt has got about 10% of crude oil extract and that is basically what you exchange for plastic - this gives your road more durability.

Horatio Hendricks, Executive mayor - Kuga Municipality

The road is more or less the same as your normal standard road [in terms of cost] but the cost saving comes in the long term because you have to do less maintenance.

Horatio Hendricks, Executive mayor - Kuga Municipality

It is more resistant to water, which is probably the biggest enemy to your normal tar roads and it is more heat-resistant. So, instead of where for a normal road every seven years you will have to reseal and maintain it, this one lasts almost twice as long.

Horatio Hendricks, Executive mayor - Kuga Municipality
