Dischem answers plea to assist Johannesburg twins with incurable disease
Northcliff twins diagnosed with hollow visceral myopathy - a degenerative neuromuscular disease of the digestive system - will now receive a year's supply of a special formula called Neocate Junior following an earnest plea on social media.
In a Facebook post this week a resident explained how the eight-year-old boys' family has had to fork out exorbitant amounts of money for the formula as medical aid does not cover it.
The mother of the twins Lauren says the boys were diagnosed with the condition between 2015 and 2018.
Unfortunately it [Neocate] Junior is the only one that works for my boys and we feel blessed that there is some kind of mechanism that allows them to get some kind of nourishment, but it is extremely expensive and takes its toll on the family. Unfortunately, our medical aid doesn't cover the feed.Loren, mother
Dischem's Sherry Saltzman says the family will now be able to access the formula at their local pharmacy.
We are going to be helping them out with their formula for an entire year. I believe the formula a month for what they cost for the 43 tins works into the ballpark figure of about R21,500.Sherry Saltzman
