The Department of Health says the current labels are very small and not user-friendly for consumers.

The Department of Health will soon enforce front-of-package labelling for foods and beverages in the country.

Speaking to Clement Manyathela on the Xolani Gwala show, Department of Health nutrition and health promotion chief director Lynn Moeng-Mahlangu says oftentimes the labels are very small and customers cant read them.

She says the food and beverage industry will be compelled to indicate on the front package the contents of products such as fat, salt and sugar.

The current labels are very small and not user-friendly for consumers. They are often written in small letters at the back of the pack and the consumer has to read all those small details.

Lynn Moeng-Mahlangu, Nutrition and health promotion chief director - Department of Health

The front pack of the labels currently focus on three nutrients for now which is sugar, salt and fat.
