Iphepha for Pupils
School stationery list
#LeadSA: Iphepha for Pupils was started in 2019 to help parents who can't afford the stationery their kids need to go to school.

It's part of the back-to-school ritual at the start of every year - eyeballing that list of required stationery and wondering how much it's going to cost this time round.

How much more of a worry then, for parents who can barely afford school fees, let alone extras.

It's out of this need that non-profit organisation Iphepha for Pupils was born at the beginning of 2019.

On Weekend Breakfast, founder Heloise Breytenbach-Uys tells Africa Melane how it came about.

My sister and I were approached by at least two domestic workers that were really stressed and very worried and burdened about the stationery for the upcoming school year. So then we decided we need to do something about this.

We just spoke about this burden that the parents carry and how they are so worried to give their children the best possible education.

The non-profit relies on contributions of money and stationery from businesses, parents and individuals.

It also offers a monthly donation option, which adds up to the annual R600 required to buy a year's school stationery.

In that 12-month period you get R50 a month and then at the end of the year there's one R600 per child that you've actually sponsored.
