'I didn't know toddlers can learn maths and physics until I taught my daughter'

University of Pretoria post-doctoral research fellow Dr Thabsile Thabethe says toddlers can learn maths and physics.

Thabethe has published a book aimed at introducing and familiarise children to these subjects from a tender age.

She speaks to Bongani Bingwa about her book.

I didn't know that toddlers can learn maths and physics until I taught my daughter. I first taught her numbers, shapes and from there, I introduced addition. Simple additions are quite simple when it comes to kids as everyone likes to receive things. If you have one ball and I give you another one, how many balls do you have? You have two, that is a simple addition.

She says she would advise parents to start teaching their children from as early as birth.

Teach them numbers, teach them the alphabet, when they are familiar with counting from one to 10, then you can introduce the other concepts.
