[LISTEN] In-depth look at the state of the SA economy
Following recent reports of unemployment figures, Eusebius McKaiser hosts a panel discussion about the state of our economy with Studies in Poverty and Inequality Institute director Isabel Frye, economist at Nedbank Busisiwe Radebe and Institute for Economic Justice director Neil Coleman.
Statistics South Africa says the country’s unemployment rate rose to 29% in the second quarter of 2019.
On the other hand, Fitch Ratings has revised the outlook on the country’s big five banks downwards from stable to negative.
Our issue is an implementation issue, it has nothing to do with nothing else. We write these wonderful documents but we don't implement what is in those documents.
Busisiwe Radebe, Economist - Nedbank
RELATED: 'Unemployment is not a problem, it's a crisis'
You are getting unskilled people looking for work, that for me is a positive sign. It should be met with some kind of support.
Isobel Frye, Director - Studies in Poverty and Inequality Institute
The economy for the majority of people has been in crisis for a long time now. The problem is that society hasn't recognised the extent of the problem. Our economy is in ICU.
Neil Coleman, Director - Institute for Economic Justice
