'Over 80% of police stations in SA do not even have one rape kit for survivors'

DA shadow police minister Andrew Whitfield says law-enforcement agencies not having evidence tools is a national crisis.

The Portfolio Committee on Police has raised concerns about the shortage of rape kits used to gather evidence from survivors at police stations.

Committee chairperson Tina Joemat-Pettersson is calling on South African Police Service (SAPS) senior management to urgently revise its strategies to deal with gender-based violence.

Clement Manyathela on the Xolani Gwala Show chats to Democratic Alliance (DA) shadow police minister Andrew Whitfield.

This is a national crisis and it is important that we contextualise it in that manner. The DA asked some parliamentary questions in February and the responses from the minister indicated that only 19.8% has even one rape kit for adults. Which means that over 80% of police stations do not have even one rape kit. The minister also said that only 17.8% of police stations have one rape kit for children.

He says the shortage of rape kits in police stations is a huge crisis that needs to be tackled with a lot more vigour, ensuring that the minister is held accountable.

Whitfield says this is not a partisan political issue, it is about the lives and dignity of women and children of South Africa.

I am convinced that the committee will call SAPS to order and ensure that we get an answer from the police as to why the tender has not been awarded.
