[LISTEN] Cape Town mayor on about-turn on affordable housing project

The City of Cape Town is being accused of anything from wasting the private sector's time to not taking the need for social housing seriously, after it apparently decided to cancel the Request For Proposals (RFP) process for the highly-anticipated Woodstock and Salt River affordable housing project, more than two years down the line.

The Western Cape Property Development Forum says it learned about this in a letter sent to a member.

In response to John Maytham's questions about the cancellation, Cape Town mayor Dan Plato says this is "not uncommon" if there are questions, legal or otherwise, that need to be sorted out.

There are reasons... With governmental processes we follow strict governmental guidelines and we can't deviate from that, unlike the private sector.

Dan Plato, Mayor of Cape Town

Any development will take in the region of four to five years from decision-making stage to 'developable' stage and going-on-site stage.

Dan Plato, Mayor of Cape Town

We are not talking about the stopping of a process. We are talking about sorting out any issues pertaining to a specific process to get the hitches out of the way that might create a problem down the line.

Dan Plato, Mayor of Cape Town

Maytham tries to get the mayor to acknowledge that the process may have been flawed, with Plato finally acknowledging that the wording in an official statement regarding specifically the Woodstock Hospital, is misleading.

My discussions with the city manager will continue at seven o' clock tomorrow morning and also to get to saying, how is it that such a letter gets put out on land that is not even bought by the City of Cape Town, that belongs to a different sphere of government - somewhere is a problem in the administration.

Dan Plato, Mayor of Cape Town
