Hawks lead investigator in Zandile Gumede case survives alleged hit

Suspended eThekwini mayor Zandile Gumede is due to appear in court on Thursday on fraud, racketeering and money laundering charges.

The Hawks have also confirmed that the lead investigator in Gumede's case has survived an alleged assassination attempt after he was shot by three unidentified gunmen last Friday.

EWN reporter Nkosikhona Duma who is following this story gives Bongani Bingwa more details.

Details on the assassination attempt are very sketchy at this moment, but what the Hawks have said is that the incident took place last Friday, in Germiston where the lead investigator was ambushed by gunmen who shot him three times. Fortunately, he survived.

He says the Hawks confirmed that they are looking to strengthen the security around those working in the suspended mayor's case.

Duma says he anticipates a lot of supporters outside court supporting Gumede.
