Zandile Gumede says she is a victim as case postponed

The case against suspended eThekwini mayor Zandile Gumede has been postponed to January.

Gumede appeared in the Durban Magistrates Court on Thursday on charges of corruption, fraud and racketeering related to a tender worth millions of rands.

Gumede was arrested in May and released on R50,000 bail.

According to Eyewitness News reporter Nkosikhona Duma, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) says it needs more time to investigate the matter.

The NPA says it needs time to investigate. It says there are a lot of people involved in this and that it has issued 286 subpoenas. It has promised that in the remaining four months of 2019 it would have finished this investigation and would have arrested more people.

Gumede has told supporters outside the court that she is being victimised.

She said that she was being victimised because she was a champion of radical economic transformation. She said, like former President Jacob Zuma, she was fighting for the interests of black people.

Meanwhile Hawks spokesperson Hangwani Mulaudzi says they are continuing an investigation into an alleged hit on one of the investigators probing the case.

The investigator was shot at an intersection in Johannesburg while on his way to work last week and rushed to hospital.

Mulaudzi says the man is recovering well.

The investigations are still ongoing but we are happy to report that the member is recuperating very well at home.
