Safety on Table Mountain

CoCT Mayco Member for Economic Opportunities James Vos says monitors, cameras, and drones will be operational by December.

Cape Town is a major tourist attraction but our crime rate and criminal acts against citizens and tourists, is becoming worrying for many. Most recently there have been fatal attacks on tourists hiking or exploring the beautiful Table Mountain National Park.

Last week, the national tourism minister together with provincial and local authorities launched the Tourism Safety Awareness Campaign on Kloofnek, Table Mountain.

The new security measures will see the placement of 86 monitors within the SANParks Table Mountain National Park, of which 60 are already on the ground and the remainder will be deployed by October 2019. To assist the monitors on the ground, cameras and drones will be installed and will be operational by December 2019.

Alderman James Vos there speaking to Kieno about a safety campaign launched by National, Provincial and Local government to make Table Mountain National Park safer.

Vos hopes the new measures will bolster the vibrant tourism sector in the city.

Tourism already employs about 300,000 Capetonians and we need to do much more to ensure local and visitor safety so the Minister of Tourism committed that tourism monitors would be brought to full strength and that additional cameras would be installed and drones utilised in Table Mountain National Park.
