A fire broke out at a Stellenbosch University campus female residence Huis Ten Bosch on Monday night around 7pm. The university released a statement saying the fire had been brought under control and all residents were safe. By 8.30pm it was extinguished.
The cause of the fire is as yet unknown.
The 164 students that were safely evacuated from the residence gathered at the Wilgenhof residence, where information was shared and where they were addressed by Prof De Villiers.— University of Stellenbosch statement
The university said it had put the necessary counselling and support services in place and was arranging alternative accommodation.
Thank you to all staff members, students and the greater Stellenbosch community who have been offering support and assistance. We are currently assessing the needs and will communicate further.— University of Stellenbosch statement
Due to smoke and water damage, students could not return to Huis Ten Bosch, but alternative accommodation was provided in other residences.
Some students have lost all their belongings and donations are welcome.
'If you are able to donate anything please drop it off at Monica Female Residence (33 Colgny Road/next to Wilgenhof) or At Silene PSO (12 Joubert Street). Anything would help!' tweeted a student
