Sizwe Mpofu-Walsh speaks to various organisations about the work they do and the challenges they encounter.

The deployment of the South African National Defence Force to the Western Cape's hotspots seems to to have much in reducing the high levels of gang-related violence.

Over the weekend, forensic services in the metro recorded 47 murders - 27 shootings, 13 stabbings and seven murders by other means.

However, Police Minister Bheki Cele has reported that the collaboration between the SANDF and the police has resulted in more than 1,000 arrests.

Western Cape residents are also making efforts to rebuild their communities and empower young girls.

Sizwe Mpofu-Walsh speaks to some organisations to find out what they do and what impact their projects have.

Alcardo Andrews Foundation founder of the Avril Andrews says she started the organisation after her son was killed and saw her family fall apart.

With my experience, I realised how important it is for mothers to heal. The family, especially the males, look up to the mother and if they see that mom is still very angry and hurt then they kind of take revenge.

It is s easy for the family members to take revenge.

The Children's Resource Centre believes that children are potential agents for change. Associate co-ordinator Shanaaz Viljoen says they educate children on general life skills.

The focus of the Children's Resource Centre is the general wellbeing of children and women socially, spiritually and physically.

Shanaaz Viljoen, Associate co-ordinator - Children's Resource Centre

We try and educate children on life skills and their rights and to build and strengthen them so they can help make a difference in their communities.

Meanwhile, Action Aid project co-ordinator Judy Kennedy says one of the biggest challenges they face working in the Cape Flats is the level of poverty, which affects the girls they are dealing with.

We work with girls who are affected by violence whether it is gender-based violence or gang-based violence in our communities. The programme focuses on personal development... organising and advocacy.

Judy Kennedy, Project co-ordinator - Action Aid

The biggest thing is the poverty that we find in the communities we work in, more especially in the Cape Flats. A lot of our work is to look at how poverty affects girls to participate in programmes.
