Muofhe appointed to head SSA domestic branch

Advocate Mahlodi Muofhe has been appointed as the new head of the domestic branch of the State Security Agency (SSA).

He was employed at the SSA as a special adviser to former minister Dipuo Letsatsi-Duba and also as special investigating unit chief governance officer.

His appointment follows President Cyril Ramaphosa’s announcement at his February state of the nation address that the SSA will be overhauled with the two arms of the intelligence service – one focusing on domestic and the other on foreign intelligence.

Clement Manyathela on The Xolani Gwala Show spoke to Muofhe about the appointment.

The good thing is that I've since met with many women and men, professionals in the agency willing to do the right thing. I think that is a plus because together with them we will try and lift the image of the agency again so that it can do what it's supposed to do in terms of the law, not to serve any other purpose.

The domestic branch focuses mainly on gathering intelligence and counter-intelligence in the country. The foreign branch focuses on international intelligence. The domestic branch should and must play a critical role in advancing the course of our democracy in ensuring that it gathers [crucial] intelligence.

As to whether the agency needs a clean-up, considering claims of phone tappings and leaked emails, as well as accusations that the agency is being used to fight political battles, Moufhe has this to say:

These are things that I heard even when I was the advisor to the former minister. I don't have any evidence before me which tells me that indeed these things were done. But in case they were done, together with my colleagues in the agency, I am sure that they will never be done any longer because that's not what the agency is meant to do.
