'We condemn Elijah Mhlanga's tweets and his actions undermine people'

Basic Education Parliament’s portfolio committee chairperson Bongiwe Mbinqo-Gigaba has condemned the department's spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga tweets and says his actions are undermining.

Mbinqo-Gigaba is responding to controversial tweets posted by Mhlanga to promote reading. One image shows a woman in revealing clothing sitting on a couch reading a book with the caption "Reading for leisure is also therapeutic. It relaxes the mind, body and soul."

Mhlanga has since apologised for his tweet.

Speaking to Clement Manyathela on the Xolani Gwala Show, Mbinqo-Gigaba and Educators Union of South Africa Gauteng secretary Kabelo Mahlobogwane on the controversial tweet.

We are of the view even though the campaign was meant to encourage children to read, the pictures that he used have missed that point. We condemn what he has done and we think that he is undermining people in general. You cannot tell our pupils that they must read while they are naked.

Mbinqo-Gigaba, Chairperson - Basic Education Parliament’s portfolio committee

She says taking an issue as important as reading and associating it with objectified naked women, needs to be dealt with harshly.

What message are you sending to these young people? That they must read naked?

Mahlobogwane says what Mhlanga did "is disgusting."

We live in a country that faces high volumes of women abuse and we see tweets like this, where he is subjecting women to objects that he can use as a tool to market, that is wrong and it is the biggest form of misconduct and it is misleading to people.
