'The axing of Gumede is factional politics in ANC, not a sign of accountability'

The African National Congress (ANC) in KwaZulu- Natal on Tuesday decided to fire eThekwieni mayor Zandile Gumede and confirmed her redeployment.

Gumede has been on extended special leave since her arrest in May on fraud and corruption charges related to an R208m waste-collection tender in 2016.

However, the ANC says firing Gumede had nothing to do with her corruption case but has everything to do with service delivery.

The issues surrounding eThekwini is a political mess that is largely a mess of the ANC's making in that province. The axing of Gumede is more factional politics playing out than a sign of better things to come in terms of accountability.
