Eyewitness News reporter Nkosikhona Duma says authorities have dropped the charges because there is not enough evidence.

Newcastle mayor Ntuthuko Mahlaba is likely to return to his position after being placed on extended special leave in June.

Murder charges against Mahlaba have been withdrawn.

He was charged in connection with the 2016 assassination of ANC Youth League Leader Wandile Ngobeni.

Eyewitness News reporter Nkosikhona Duma says the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) cannot go ahead with the case because there is not enough evidence.

The authorities have withdrawn the charges because the NPA said they simply do not have enough evidence. They say five of the six witnesses in this matter are saying they will no longer co-operate with the NPA, they claim that they have been coerced.

Mahlaba says he feels vindicated.

He says that he feels vindicated because he has consistently maintained that he was innocent in this case and that the charges against him were cooked for political reasons. He says he will be able to move on with his political career and focus on his mayoral duties.

Nkosikhona Duma, Reporter - EWN

Duma says the African National Congress (ANC) spokesperson in KwaZulu-Natal, Ricardo Mthembu, has said that now that the charges against Mahlaba have been dismissed, he will be able to resume his duties as the mayor.

The ANC in KwaZulu- Natal are saying that they are now backing him because he has been cleared of these charges.
