Cement industry struggling to compete with cheaper imports
The cement industry has taken a couple of knocks the first being slowing demand for the product in South Africa and the other being the prolific rate at which cheap cement products are being imported into South Africa.
The Industry leaders have now called on Government to intervene and place tariffs on foreign imports.
Kieno Kammies talks to Concrete Institute MD Bryan Perrie about its concerns.
He says the economic downturn with the added pressure of cement imports from Pakistan, Vietnam, and China is having a detrimental effect on the local concrete industry.
The undercutting numbers we are looking at are around 45 or 50%.Bryan Perrie, Managing director - Concrete Institute
He says a level playing field is needed and these other countries do not have the same legislation as South Africa.
Perrie says like, with the steel industry, they want government to regulate that local cement is used in local projects.
