W Cape Traffic Chief Kenny Africa says private security working with the department is helping curb the stonings on the highway.

Hijackings and stone-throwing on Cape Town's N2 have become so frequent that numbers of motorists choose alternative routes rather than travel the N2.

Provincial Traffic Chief Kenny Africa attended a meeting which included MEC Albert Fritz, SAPS, department of community safety, and members of various to discuss potential strategies in tackling the challenges the N2 faces.

Kieno Kammies talks to Kenny Africa about the plans to improve safety on the highway dubbed 'the hell run'.

Africa agrees the stretch between Cape Town and Sir Lowry's Pass has become notorious but says the area around the Gordon's Bay turn-off down to Somerset West is also becoming a dangerous site.

We are picking up problems of people throwing stones at motor vehicles and petrol bombs thrown into vehicles.

Kenny Africa, Traffic Chief - Western Cape

He outlines a plan that has been implemented in that area where security guards are assisting the traffic department in patrols.

Since we started with this process two weeks ago there have been no incidents on the N2.

Kenny Africa, Traffic Chief - Western Cape

He says the combined presence of security guards, Saps and provincial traffic are able to stop any dangerous incidents immediately on the scene.

He says it is essential to bring the private sector on board to help and ensure visibility on the N2.

Private security assisting traffic department is the way to go.

Kenny Africa, Traffic Chief - Western Cape

He says a traffic officer had a rock thrown through his car window and was robbed of all his devices on Sunday morning and. He was taken out of his vehicle but fortunately was not badly hurt.

The people have got no respect for law enforcement officials and no respect for traffic officials.

Kenny Africa, Traffic Chief - Western Cape

Africa drives the N2 every morning between 4.45 and 6.30am

Every single day of my life, I will be driving that road for the next year.

Kenny Africa, Traffic Chief - Western Cape

His advice to motorists when driving on the N2?

Always make sure you follow the vehicles in front of you.

Don't try and pass those vehicles...rather stay with other motorists on the road.

Kenny Africa, Traffic Chief - Western Cape

The all-hours number to call for assistance from the City of Cape Town is 021 480 7700 and Western Cape Provincial Traffic 021 946 1646.
