Political analyst Dr Somadoda Fikeni weighs in on President Cyril Ramaphosa's ANC election campaign.

Political analyst Dr Somadoda Fikeni says the problem with the party system in South Africa is that it gives more power and control to the elite in the leadership which distorts internal party democracies.

Fikeni is weighing in on the Sunday Independent's report on how the money generated by President Cyril Ramaphosa’s CR17 campaign was allegedly abused by some campaign leaders and revealed in leaked bank statements.

Bongani Bingwa chats to the political analyst about the revelations.

They should focus on how money and politics have twisted this above other things, but also the fact that members are not directly appointing members.

Dr Somadoda Fikeni, Political analyst

He says there was a call for 'money politics' in the African National Congress to be looked into at the ANC Polokwane and Mangaung election conferences, but it wasn't done.

The more fictionalised the ANC became, the worse it became for just about all candidates.

Dr Somadoda Fikeni, Political analyst

This question to Ramaphosa's integrity is even direr in a country that is not doing well economically, politics is a booming economic activity he suggests.

Even if Ramaphosa is legally and technically fine, the political and integrity damage is the main one because he campaigned on the basis of cleaning the very corruption he is accused of.
