Justice Edwin Cameron
EWN reporter Theto Mahlakoana unpacks the judge's final ruling at South Africa’s apex court, giving relief to labour tenants.

After 25 years on the bench, Constitutional Court Justice Edwin Cameron has retired.

Cameron delivered his final judgment, relating to claims from land tenant farmers some of which date back to over 20 years, at South Africa’s ConCourt court on Tuesday.

The apex court has dismissed the Department of Rural Development and Labour Reform’s appeal that challenged the Land Claims Court’s appointment of the special master.

Clement Manyathela on the Xolani Gwala Show chats to EWN reporter Theto Mahlakoana who is following the story.

The appointment of that special master was to ensure that there is an implementation of that Labour Tenants Act. We know that a lot of workers who have lived on land that was traditionally owned by their employers have been unable to claim some sort of ownership over that land.

She adds that this judgment will provide relief to labour tenants providing security where they reside.

Mahlakoana says the judgment was delivered at a special sitting for Cameron.

It was an emotional send-off for a remarkable justice of the ConCourt but also an activist and a great South African who contributed to the country's development.
