Occupational therapist Rozanne Groenewald suggests taking a 'fitness to drive' assessment.

Occupational therapist Rozanne Groenewald says more awareness is needed around the impact of driving while on psychiatric medication.

Speaking to Azani Mosaka, Groenewald says patients need to be more aware of the medications they are given and how they may affect one's driving ability.

The reality is that some of our medications do have significant side effects and some of them are particularly related to sleeping and drowsiness which can affect driving.

Research has shown us that overall, persons with mental health problems perform better in terms of their driving when they are on their medication.

If you have a family member you are concerned about, Groenewald has the following advice:

The best way to go about it is to have them go for fitness to drive assessment. Depending on the assessment the therapist will advise on the way forward.
