Activists seek African language development in universities

Elinor Sisulu says the government should prioritise indigenous languages.

A group of activists has launched a campaign calling for President Cyril Ramaphosa to intervene in what they call a 'systematic marginalization' of Africans in mother tongue education.

The campaign is seeking assistance from the public to address the 'exclusion of black academics from literacy and African language development.'

Nickolaus Bauer speaks to Puku Foundation executive director Elinor Sisulu.

Sisulu says the government should make indigenous languages a priority.

Having a conversation with these teachers is not going to cost too much money.

Start with the teachers already doing the work and ask them in their process of teaching isiZulu or Sesotho what are the issues they are facing and how can we help them do their job better.
