The Trauma Centre for Survivors of Violence and Torture has released a research report related to gang violence in Manenberg.
The report reveals that there are about 45 gangs operating within the community and that estimates show there are currently 130 gangs operative on the Cape Flats.
The report proposed the establishment of a commission of inquiry to investigate gang prevention and intervention efforts in the province as its key recommendation.
To give us more insight to the report we spoke to Valdi Van Reenen-Le Roux, Executive Director at TCSVT:
We were called in 2013 to lead a psycho-social program with the survivors of the gang violence… We thought it would be good for us to analyse the data from the individual client files but also to gain the experiences of the trauma councillor’s and trauma support officers in order for us to look at how we can support our own processes in terms of mental health— Valdi Van Reenen-Le Roux, Executive Director at TCSVT
