Terror expert says it's 'business as usual' for localised branches of ISIS despite death of leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

One of the country's leading experts on terror says the death of Islamic State (Isis) leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi will not make a significant difference to the threat of terrorism on a global scale.

During a press conference on Sunday, US President Donald Trump confirmed al-Baghdadi had been killed in a US military operation in northwest Syria after being under surveillance for a couple of weeks.

It (his death) is not making a significant difference, but there is now a moment of setback for the Islamic State, undoubtedly.

Jasmine Opperman, Director - TRAC (Terrorism Research and Analysis Consortium)

However, Opperman also suggests that al-Baghdadi was, in fact, more of a figurehead than active in planning and coordinating attacks by the group.

We're actually seeing the Islamic State becoming more localised and entrenhced in diffrent areas across the world be it Nigeria, the Phillipines, be it the DRC.

Jasmine Opperman, Director - TRAC (Terrorism Research and Analysis Consortium)

So where you have your local command structure, acting independently coordinating attacks, it's business as usual.
