The University of Stellenbosch and the Legal Aid Clinic has won a case on behalf of 15 consumers against garnishee orders, a debt collecting procedure used by micro-lenders which the Western Cape High Court found to be “unconstitutional” and “an assault on human dignity”.
Businessperson and philanthropist Wendy Appelbaum had backed this case after she discovered that some of her workers were battling with garnishee orders.
