SA hosts summit to discuss global health security

Effort is being made by national government and the international community to strengthen the capacity of the world's most vulnerable communities to manage disease outbreaks.

The recent ebola outbreak which affected parts of West Africa has highlighted the need to establish a common framework to accelerate action towards global health security.

The Department of Health and the World Health Organisation (WHO) are hosting 200 high-level health experts are in Cape Town to discuss the acceleration of global health security.

We spoke with National Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, United Nations (UN) Special Envoy for Ebola's Dr David Nabarro and the Assistant Director-General for WHO Dr Keiji Fukuda.

We want to accelerate the way we defend countries and communities against threats like ebola and other infectious diseases. We want to improve detection, responses, treatment and awareness. We have to step up as health partners and we are looking for commitments at this summit.
