Mom makes call for equal maternity, paternity leave rights for adoptive parents

There are calls for labour laws in the country to recognise the maternity and paternity leave rights of adoptive parents.

Laverne Vermeulen, a Cape Town mother, has received a lot of responses to her petition which is calling for equal maternity and paternity leave for all parents.

Vermeulen, who recently adopted a baby girl, says that maternity or paternity leave is a special time for one to bond with their child, and should be the right of all parents, regardless of how they choose to parent.

The Basic Conditions of Employment Act currently entitles pregnant women to four consecutive months of maternity leave.

What I would like is for us to be treated equally. The main caregiver of the child should be given four months, regardless of their parenting decision.
