Cape Town mom reflects on triumph of setting record maintenance payout in court

Sally Cooper-Goodwin’s ex-husband has been ordered to pay out R450 000 for the unpaid maintenance of their three children.

I don’t feel like it’s a victory really. The system eventually worked and I got what was due. I want to tell other mothers not to give up. You have to keep at it, if for nothing else, for your children.

Sally Cooper-Goodwin

This landmark maintenance payout victory was ordered by the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court in the Western Cape and is reportedly the highest maintenance payout in the legal history of South Africa.

According to Cooper-Goodwin, for the first year following their divorce, her ex-husband paid child support sporadically until he stopped altogether.

Her ex-husband’s pension fund was attached to compensate for the 10 years’ worth of outstanding maintenance as part of the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development’s Operation Isondlo campaign.

The Isondlo campaign targets parents who are failing to make their maintenance payments.

Cooper-Goodwin reflects on the lengthy ordeal and gives advice to others fighting child maintenance battles.
