Why it's impossible for Mboweni to deliver a Budget speech that'll please SA

Economist Dawie Roodt says it's unlikely that the country will be happy with Finance Minister Tito Mboweni's Budget speech on Wednesday.

Roodt, the Chief Economist at The Efficient Group says Mboweni will have to cut back on state spending or increase taxes, or both.

Roodt says Mboweni needs to slash the public sector wage bill but he's facing political pressure and potential push back from unions.

He says Mboweni has to deliver the national Budget in a tough context of poor economic growth, government's fiscal deficit and dysfunctional SOEs that have become dependent on bailouts.

As far as the state's finances are concerned, it is not possible for the Minister of Finance to deliver a speech that's going to make people happy.

Dawie Roodt, Chief Economist - The Efficient Group

The reality is that we've waited far too long to restructure the state's finances.

Dawie Roodt, Chief Economist - The Efficient Group

I'm afraid that there is no way that this Budget is going to make people happy.
