Call for revisit of our electoral system

Former Chairperson of the IEC, Dr Brigalia Bam says that the election system must be revisited. Stephen spoke to her about this.

Dr Bam made a recent comment that the current system of proportional representation that we have – that sees parties being allocated seats in parliament based on the simple percentage of votes they receive should be changed. She reckons that an an inclusive process, that involves civil society, politics, business is needed going forward.

Says Dr Bam:

South Africans need to revisit whether we are now in a position to modify the system – we need in some parts to choose the person we want to represent them in a local situation and even set a criteria for the person they want.
