The Western Cape Department of Transport and Public Works has this week approved 201 metred taxi operating licenses of which 145 of these were applications from Uber partner drivers. In light of developments around Uber, we want to better understand how regulatory environment operate.
We spoke to Spokesperson of the Western Cape Department of Transport, Siphesihle Dube:
There are various types of licenses and there is no licensing with us that compels each organisation to apply for a specific one, they make that application so it is either approved or not approved if it fits into the definitions as per the National and Transport Act. There are chauffeur services operating license, chatter service operating license, meter taxis, tourist operating licenses and normal mini bus taxis operating licenses— Siphesihle Dube, Spokesperson Department of Transport
