The South African Medical Association (Sama) has made public its grievances about the Workmen’s Compensation Fund. Sama says that the system is dysfunctional and has caused a huge backlog of unpaid claims.
Sama represents private and state doctors operating in South Africa. According to Sama, more medical practices in the country have had to use their own financial reserves to continue operating because of the consequences of these unpaid claims.
It is reported that Sama today, was to instruct doctors in the country to not treat patients who have been injured on the job.
We spoke to Vuyo Mafata, Acting Commissioner, Compensation Fund at The Department of Labour:
We received a communique from Sama which was actually a response to our request to meet with them, where they indicated that they have no interest in meeting us but they would rather be issuing a press release where they will be instructing their members not to treat any of the Compensation Fund Clients…— Vuyo Mafata, Acting Commissioner, Compensation Fund
