There was a report this morning that two female members of the Tshwane Metro Police, who were told they had to cut their hair to the same length as male members of the service, have now been allowed back into the service by the High Court in Pretoria.
Stephen speaks to Puke Maserumule, a Labour Lawyer at Maserumule Incorporated about the whether your workplace really can order you to have your hair in a certain way.
Maserumule explains that employers can set certain rules around uniform and requirements on hairstyles, however the rule must be reasonable, otherwise the court will shut it down. This particular case was thrown out of court because of the unreasonableness of the rule - requiring the female employees to have their hair 'at the same length as their male members'.
The question is: are you able to properly do your job with your hair at the length you keep it?— Puke Maserumule, a Labour Lawyer at Maserumule Incorporated
