Errol Musk, the father of inventor and entrepreneur Elon Musk says that the prominence of rugby culture in some South African schools is a contributor to bullying of school pupils who do not play rugby.
Speaking to Alex Hogg from BizNews, Errol Musk shared how Elon Musk was beaten up badly when he was in Grade 8 by a schoolmate. He later laid a charge of assault, but the Randburg police refused to prosecute saying that the incident was just of schoolboys playing around.
Mike Wills (standing in for John Maytham) spoke to Keith Richardson, Headmaster at Wynberg Boys’ High School.
We work very hard not to make it predominant sport but because of the press coverage and prestige that goes with it, it is seen as a sport that is favoured by boys— Keith Richardson
Richardson dismissed and brushed off the idea that rugby could contribute to bullying of those who do not play.
