Don't rush, but don't wait too long either: The ideal age to tie the knot

A recent study claims that if you get married between the ages of 28 and 32, you have the best chance of making it through the first five years of marriage without getting divorced.

It finds that the odds of getting a divorce increase by 5 percent each year once you reach the age of 32.

CapeTalk presenter Pippa Hudson spoke with Deon Binneman, Clinical Psychologist and Marriage Counsellor.

There is nothing in my experience that would make me disagree with the study. I've never conducted research per se, but I tend to agree with the findings. People who sometimes get married to soon or too young can struggle with their relationship.

Deon Binneman, Clinical Psychologist and Marriage Counsellor.

Sociologist at the University of Utah, Nicholas Wolfinger, looked at data from the National Survey of Family Growth and the study was published by the Institute of Family Studies.

It found that while the risk of divorce declines steadily from your teens into your late 20s - it starts to rise again somewhere in your 30s.
