LeadSA: A home away from home for 106 years - Irene Homes

Irene Home is being taking care of the destitute for the past 106 years. It was founded the Bishop of the Anglican Church in Pretoria to care for women and girls who were abandoned and in difficult situations.

Today Irene Homes provides a caring residential haven for 88 women who are housed in 8 houses, each with a housemother. The houses are run independently, encouraging residents to consider it their ‘home away from home’.

CapeTalk/702’s Redi Tlhabi speaks to Estelle van Schoor, CEO of Irene Homes about the work they are doing at Irene Home.

According to Van Schoor over the years Irene has grown to be a much needed home for mentally disabled adult ladies.

The residents at Irene Homes spend their days in workshop doing sewing, knitting, weaving and art and crafts which are later sold to subsidise their own disability grant. In these workshops the ladies are given the opportunity to learn new skills and spend their time in protected environment.

Although Irene Homes is getting some government handouts, it is not enough.

  • They welcome people with expertise volunteering their time to help the ladies
  • Donating unwanted product to sell at their charity shop
  • Any kinds of donations (fruit and Vegetables)
  • Financial contributions
