LeadSA: In honor of Ashley Kaimowitz

The LeadSA hero of the month of July is Ashley Kaimowitz, a teenager whose visit to Nonceba Family Counselling Centre changed everything.

At the age of 16 Ashley visited Nonceba Centre in Khayelitsha. At the time, the centre was operating out of a small 2-room facility. She was so shocked by the child rape crisis she encountered there, that she decided to do something about it.

Ashley scripted and filmed a documentary about the centre, and used this to help raise funds for its improvement, both in South Africa and during her rotary exchange year in Japan.

Tragically Ashley was killed by a drunk driver at the age of 19. But her efforts were not forgotten and enough donor money came in to build a brand new Nonceba.

Ashley may be gone, but the centre is a very real reminder of how much difference one person can make, if they just decide to act for change.

Ashley was nominated by Pippa Hudson.
