'We must speak up against the tyranny of the majority'- former justice Kriegler

Retired Constitutional Court judge Johann Kriegler says President Jacob Zuma is misusing the power of Parliament and the majority to override constitutional processes.

According to Kriegler, President Zuma is using the “tyranny of the majority” to avoid the courts in connection with Public Protector Thuli Madonsela’s Nkandla report.

It is long and complex. People believe that democracy means that the majority rules. But this only applies to a certain degree. In our case we have a Constitution that defines the actions of the majority. But the majority has disobeyed the law.

Kriegler says that civil society must continue raising their voices and showing disatisfaction for the ‘tendencies of the ruling party’ ahead of the next elections.
