Mark Barnes together with a group of private businessmen are at the forefront lobbying the government to accept a proposal that would see the private sector rescuing the ailing South African Post Office.
Barnes is the chairman of Purple Capital and a seasoned private equity player. Although Barnes has accepted that the post office would not be privatised, he says that the government and the private sector need a closer working relationship.
CapeTalk’s John Maytham spoke to Mark Barnes about the ailing South African Post office:
According to Barnes SAPO should cease operating traditionally and start thinking of e-commerce not as an enemy but as a friend. He spoke about Post Office as investment facility, the post office delivering antiretroviral to people who are HIV positive or offering computer services to the community.
