The department of basic education’s Dr Granville Whittle was briefing parliament’s portfolio committee on education earlier today.
Dr Whittle says violence in schools is a global problem and has been the focus of much research. He also said that relying on police or armed security guards to solve violence in schools is no solution to the problem.
Eye Witness news Gaye Davis was at the briefing, she reports:
Davis says Dr Whittle’s solutions were that teachers need to be trained to identify learners at risk and be able to manage conflict. He also said that having smaller manageable classes could help.
