Fourth accused in Mido Macia murder trial claims 'confusion'

Former police officer Bongumusa Mdluli, accused number four, has taken questions from lawyers after denying charges that he murdered Mido Macia.

All four accused who have so far testified in the Mido Macia trial have told the High Court in Pretoria that they were not inside a holding cell with the Mozambican taxi driver at the Daveyton Police Station.

Nine ex-police officers implicated in the death of the Mozambican national have plead not guilty at the start of the trial.

Macia was found dead in a holding cell after being dragged behind a police van in Daveyton in February 2013.

According to EWN Reporter Masego Rahlaga, Mdluli says that he was confused, but did everything he could to prevent Macia's death.

Mdluli is accused number four in the trial. He says he was confused after he arrived at the taxi rank because the crowd kept shouting and obscuring them. He said he did hear the warning shots that were fired. He says he tried everything possible to make sure that Macia's life was safe. According to Mdluli, he drove behind the police van in another vehicle, hooted and flickered his lights.
