Empowering women to be financial savvy

Women need to focus on the concerns that are unique to their lifestyles when planning for retirement. This is according to Iona Minton, a financial education consultant and journalist.

According to Minton women have better jobs than most men but the problem is they are overly indebted.

Women don’t manage money well

Talking to Africa Melane (standing in for Redi Tlhabi) a day after women’s day, Minton said that because women have too much on their plates (taking care of children etc) they often defer the responsibilities to men to handle their finances.

When women get divorced or separated from their partners they find it hard to get back on their feet because they’ve been dependent on their partners and don’t have knowledge to manage their finances effectively, she said.
