Stephen spoke to a psychologist, Dr Eddie Wolff, about factors that could contribute to a teenager committing suicide.
Dr Wolff says that teenage suicide is usually a result of an inability to cope with depression, that leads to an impulsive action.
If we see a depressed teenager, we must take it very seriously. It's not just moodiness.— Dr Eddie Wolff, Clinical Psychologuist
Dr Wolff says that parents should look out for these following warning signs:
- Increased moodiness and increased quietness
- Withdrawn behaviour - including irritability and negativity
- Withdrawal from peer group or appearing excluded from peers
When these signs are in place, parents should take the child to your nearest doctor to determine suicidal potential and referral to mental health specialists.
