August is National Organ Donor Awareness Month. In South Africa, there are approximately 4 300 adults and children awaiting a life-saving organ and cornea transplant.
Jenna Lowe was named posthumously as our national lead SA Youth Hero of the Year, for the amazing work she did recruiting organ donors via her Getmeto21 campaign. Although she passed on before reaching 21 her campaign helped to draw attention to the fact that we simply do not have enough people registered as organ donors.
CapeTalk’s Pippa Hudson spoke Gillian Walker, National Media Liason, Organ Donor Foundation as well as Leigh Wilkinson, whose mom is on the organ donor waiting list:
We have 150 000 registered people on our database and the number is increasing everyday— illian Walker, National Media Liason, Organ Donor Foundation
According to Walker, during Jenna’s campaign, there were more than 20 000 people who registered for organ donation.
Leigh Wilkinson’s mom has been diagnosed with end stage kidney failure. She is being on the waiting list for the past two years. Leigh says she gets weaker and weaker every month.
They have been told her chances of getting a new kidney is 8 years wait, but Leigh says her mom cannot wait that long.
