The University of Western Cape's (UWC) Professor Marla Trindade has been awarded with the Distinguished Young Woman In Science award by the Department of Science and Technology.
Trindade leads the UWC team in the EU-funded project PharmaSea, which looks for compounds that can be extracted from marine life to be used to fight diseases such as malaria and HIV/AIDS.
In an effort to showcase the brilliant work and research being done by our many academic institutes in the province, CapeTalk's Kieno Kammies spoke with the professor about her recognition and research.
The research brings us in touch with leading global scientists. We want to generate to novel compounds that can go into the drug development stage. It fouceses mainly on central nervous diseases, anti-infection and cosmetics.— Professor Marla Trindade, UWC researcher
