The controversial, Professor Tim Noakes says, in a series of claims this morning, that salt is not as bad for you as many people claim it is. Noakes is the man behind the widespread Banting diet.
Noakes says that there is no evidence to support claims that reducing the amount of salt in our diet will improve your health. Dietician, Gabriel Eksteen of the Heart and Stroke Foundation disagrees with him.
Eksteen spoke to Stephen this afternoon, saying that the dangers of salt are still very much a reality, despite what Tim Noakes says. He says that some people are more prone to salt-sensitive hypertension.
In particular, African people (from an ancestry point of view, are more likely to have salt-sensitive hypertension. It should be something higher on our priority than what it is.— Gabriel Eksteen, dietician at Heart and Stroke Foundation
