Zakes Mda in SA to see "Heart of Redness" stage production

Renowned author, poet and playwright, Zakes Mda spends only a third of his time in South Africa, this time he's here for a few weeks to catch the Opera production of his novel Heart of Redness.

Cape Town Opera and Magnet Theatre present a musical adaptation of Zakes Mda’s novel, Heart of Redness, at The Fugard Theatre which closes tonight having opened on Wednesday this week.

A multi-talented 15-member cast, comprising Magnet Theatre and UCT Drama School graduates and some of Cape Town Opera’s youngest members, come together to perform in this new production under the direction of Mark Fleishman with music by Neo Muyanga, movement direction by Jennie Reznek and design by Craig Leo.

Speaking to Africa Melane on Weekend Breakfast Mda said that he always gets nervous before he sees work based on his novels adapted by artists but he expressed his satisfaction with the final result of the production.

As I sat there and watched this thing unfold, I was amazed at how these guys managed to use the devices that they used to tell their story. I think it's worked wonderfully, so I was very happy with the result...

I don't jealously guard my work that 'no no no, it must not be changed, it must be exactly as it was'. It can never be because these are different media, when it's now a movie it's no longer the novel, it will not work like a novel, it must speak in the language of movies in the same way that the stage performance - that hybrid of Opera must speak in the language of the stage.
